Why Motion Needs a Point of View
Animation becomes meaningful when it clarifies relationships, establishes rhythm, and gives an interface a distinct emotional temperature.

Motion is part of the voice
A product can be technically polished and still feel anonymous. Motion is one of the clearest ways to give an interface a point of view because it reveals how the system understands time, attention, and change.
The question is not whether an element should move. It is what the movement should communicate. A quick fade can signal continuity. A deliberate slide can establish hierarchy. A small delay can make a transition feel considered instead of mechanical.
Build a rhythm system
Useful motion systems rely on a small vocabulary of behaviors rather than a different animation for every screen. Define how elements enter, how states change, and how the interface responds to interruption. Repetition creates recognition, while variation keeps the experience alive.
The best motion is often felt before it is noticed. It helps users understand where they came from, what changed, and where to look next. That quiet clarity is more valuable than spectacle.
Motion budgets, not motion maximums
Every animated moment costs the user a little attention and a little patience. Treat motion like a budget rather than a feature list: decide upfront how many moments per screen deserve emphasis, and let everything else resolve quickly and quietly. This discipline prevents an interface from feeling like it is performing for its own sake.
In practice this means auditing a flow end to end and asking which transitions actually carry information. A modal opening deserves care. A hover state on a list item usually does not need a spring, a rotation, and a color shift all at once.
Designing for interruption
Real usage is messy. People tap twice, scroll mid-transition, and switch tabs before an animation finishes. A motion system is only as good as its worst interruption: does the interface recover gracefully, or does it stutter, jump, or lock the UI? Testing animations under interruption reveals more about quality than testing them in isolation ever will.
When a system handles interruption well, users stop noticing the motion at all — which is usually the sign that it is doing its job.
